Second Tour Poster

This is the second tour poster that I created. The improvements in this tour poster compared to the first one that I made are vast. I have done one of the the two things that I set out to do after I completed my first tour poster, which was to include stripes at the bottom of the poster where the dates of the tour are going to be.

The other one which was "use colourful images on a black background to make it more eye catching" and I decided not to do that with this tour poster because the black and white theme works well with the effects I have done to the image. I used the artistic filter 'cut out' to give the image the effect that it has on my tour poster. I think that this makes the poster look better manipulated on the black background and works well with the strips underneath it and the white text.

I think that when it comes to making my final tour poster it will look similar because I like the way that the manipulated image works well with the black and white theme of the poster, which is something that I now know I can do to make a professional looking tour poster.

Tour Poster Draft

ORIGINAL tour poster from Tenacious D
This is the first tour poster that I created in Photoshop, the only tool that I used when creating this poster was inserting an image into the text at the top of the poster.

I do not know much about Photoshop and that is why I the first poster I have made is not of a good quality. I plan on improving my skills in Photoshop so when it comes to creating my final tour poster it will look significantly better than this one and include a variety of tools and effects to help make it look more professional.

In order to create a professional looking tour poster I will need to see what one looks like. I have found a small selection of tour posters from the internet and will analyse them to see what makes the other posters look more professional than mine.

This first tour poster is by Drake. The image is black and white and that matches with the black background, also the text is big and bold in the middle of the poster. The red stripes to separate the dates of the places he will be touring to is an idea that I think will look professional on my final tour poster. You can obviously see the difference between this tour poster and my own as this one has qualities that mine does not.

The second tour poster is by The Script. This poster is eye catching as the variety of colours coming from the image in the centre of the poster contrast to the black background to make it look imposing. This poster goes with an unique approach compared to the others as the image on the poster is the same from the album; whilst other posters go with an image of the artist. This shows me that if I use colourful text/imagery on a black background it makes the poster more eye catching and makes people take notice.

The final poster is from Eminem. This poster is not as good as the previous two because I don't think the red and the blue match well together on the white background making the text very hard to read. I don't think this is a good tour poster as the image is very imposing on the poster and his attire doesn't match the text and I think that contributes to the fact that it is hard to read.

After looking at the three posters I have identified two things that I will be using on my tour poster to help it look professional:

  • Stripes over the dates of the tour to make it look more creative
  • Use colourful images/text on a black background to make it look more eye catching

Music Downloads

Recently there hasn't been any music that has been released that I have considered downloading. This got me thinking how often people download songs or if they do at all, and if not why they don't. When asked there was a total of 40% (4/10) in my class that have downloaded music in the past month. I asked a few questions to one of the people who has Michael Hickey on the music that he downloads.

Question 1) How many songs have you downloaded in the past month?
"In the past month I have downloaded three albums and two singles."

Question 2) Do you download your songs from iTunes or pirate them?
"I download all my music from iTunes."

Question 3) Why?
"I have too many albums and songs on my phone to start over and use one of them free song apps and it would be too hard to keep track of which songs are on what."

Question 4) How was you first made aware about the albums and songs you download?
"I have albums from the artist previously and iTunes recommended the albums to me."

Question 5) Do you go to many gigs or concerts or do you just listen to music on your iPhone?
"I just download music and listen to it on my phone, but I would like to start going to a few gigs and plan on trying to go to a few this year."

Question 6) How often do you download music?
"I tend to download music every 2-3 weeks as I listen to music often."

As you can see, people still very much use iTunes to download their music, even though there are many websites and apps now-a-days that you can use to pirate music for free. This was one of the people that downloads music often, however I have not downloaded music in a while so I thought I would answer questions to why I have not.

Question 1) Why have you not downloaded music in the past month?
There hasn't been any songs that have been released in the past month that I have liked enough to download.

Question 2) When you download music do you use iTunes or anything else?
I use an app on my phone to download my music because at least if you don't like a song you haven''t wasted your money.

Question 3) How often do you download music?
Probably about once a month depending on what music comes out.

Turning images into text

This photoshop technique explores the tool of inserting images into text, this is a useful technique to use creating my tour poster. This has helped me enhance my skills when using photoshop as I will need to acquire new skills in order to create a professional tour poster. I will be looking into a combination of advanced and basic techniques that I did not know how to do in photoshop so when I have to create my tour poster I can do so to the best of my ability.

Camera Movement

Camera Movements

In order to create a professional looking music video I need to familiarise myself again with all the camera movements I will need to know.

Zoom in

Also referred to as the close up is when the camera zooms in on to the artists face making a tight frame. This is used to show the artist singing in the music video or to show something that is important to the music video.

Zoom out

This is when the camera zooms out of the close up and brings something else into focus in the music video. This turns the tight frame into a wide frame and is used to bring something/someone else into focus in the music video.

Tracking shot

This is when the camera follows the focus of the video for a small period of time, in an music video it is normally done for no longer than a couple of seconds. This is done on a dolly, which is like a mini train track where the camera rests on and the dolly pulls the camera and 'tracks' the subject of the music video. The dolly offers smooth consistent movement opposed to someone carrying the camera and walking in front of the subject of the music video.

Pan

This is when the camera moves from side to side to reveal everything that is in the shot. A pan is performed by turning horizontally on a vertical axis, but placing the camera on a platform to move the camera whole offers a more smooth movement. This camera movement is used in music videos to bring more actors into focus (possibly other artists).

Whip pan

This is the same as a pan except a whip pan is faster, this can be used for the same purpose of the pan but the fact that it is faster helps the movement stay in tune with the song making the video more appealing to the target audience.

Arc

This is when the camera arcs over the artist in the music video, the movement creates a semi-circle over the subject and around him/her. This movement is used to give a better depth of field over the subject and can be used to first introduce the artist to the audience.

Crane

This movement is self explanatory as the cameraman sits on the end of a crane and shoots the scene from high up. This movement can help shoot large crowds and can be used in house music videos as the music video is stereo typically the artist performing in front of large crowds. They can also be used to end music videos as the camera goes up and away from the artist. Health and safety is a concern when filming this camera movement as the camera man has to sit on the end of the crane whilst filming. The camera man will have to wear a harness because there is a chance that when the crane is moving that the camera man falls off the crane.

Steadicam

The steadicam is similar to the tracking shot as the camera follows the subject of the music video. To allow a smoother shot the camera is attached to a harness that is around the camera mans waist and remains steady even when moving fast or on an uneven surface. This is used for the same purpose of the tracking shot as the camera man follows the artists with the camera on the harness around his waist.

Aerial shot

This is also known as the 'birds eye shot' as the camera is high up looking directly down on the landscape. This is used for the same purpose as the 'establishing shot' as this shot is used in music videos for revealing the location that the video is going to be performed in. It is filmed similar to the crane shot however instead of focusing on the subject of the music video from high up it is used to establish where the music video will be filmed.

Hand Held

This shot is similar to the tracking shot and the steadicam, however this shot is not as smooth as the other two shots. The camera man places the camera in his hand and follows the subject of the music video, and the camera shakes realistically when running with the camera. This is used in fast paced videos as it immerses the audience into the music video and make them feel like they are there.

Lip Sync (Skillet- One day too late)

After working on the first lip sync video that I edited, I decided to do my lip sync to Skillet - One day too late. This is a song that I enjoy listening to and felt comfortable lip syncing to, I edited this the same as the first lip sync video as I am developing my skills of editing videos and just reaffirmed the skills I already have.
